What this site collects through Google Site Kit — Google Analytics and AdSense — how to turn it off, and how voter data is handled.
01
The short version
This site uses Google’s tools to count its readers and has carried Google ads. It has no accounts, sells no data, and never links what you read to a voter record.
The site runs Google Site Kit, Google’s WordPress plugin, which connects it to Google Analytics to measure which pages are read and how people arrive at them, and to Google AdSense, which has placed ads on its pages. Both are Google services: what they collect is collected by Google, under Google’s terms, and the ways to turn them off are in section 03.
There are no accounts on this site and nothing to sign in to. We do not sell, rent or share data, and we do not try to identify anyone who reads a page.
02
What is collected and stored
What Google’s tools collect, and the two things this site keeps itself.
Google Analytics. When a page loads, Google’s tag reports the page, the time, the page you came from, your browser and device, and an approximate location to Google. It sets first-party cookies (named _ga and _ga_ followed by an ID) so a return visit can be told from a new one. We see the totals Google reports, not individual readers. Google explains its use at how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Google AdSense. Where ads appear, Google and its advertising partners choose them and may set cookies on their own domains to show ads, limit repeats and measure them, and may personalise ads to your interests unless you have turned that off.
Search. The search pages carry no Google tags, and the site keeps no record of what anyone searched.
Your light or dark theme preference. Kept in your browser’s local storage so the site does not flash white at night. It is not a cookie, is never sent to us, and clearing site data removes it.
Ordinary web server logs. Our host records requests — address, page, time, browser — as every web server does. We do not analyse them for behaviour or build profiles from them.
The host’s log retention period is not documented here yet. It is set by the hosting provider rather than by us, and this page should name the actual figure rather than a comfortable guess.
03
Turning it off
Each of these works on its own; none needs anything from us.
- Google Analytics: Google’s opt-out browser add-on, or block cookies from this site in your browser.
- Personalised ads: Google’s My Ad Center, where ad personalisation can be switched off.
- Everything at once: a content blocker, or your browser’s tracking protection. Every page reads the same without Google’s scripts.
What we do not do: sell, rent or share data; build a profile of you; try to identify you; or link anything you read here to a voter record.
04
Voter data, and why you cannot look anyone up here
This is the part people are right to ask about.
Washington voter registration records are public under RCW 29A.08.720, restricted to political purposes, with penalties for misuse under RCW 29A.08.740.
We use them only in aggregate — registration and turnout by district or precinct. No individual voter record is published, exported, or kept in our code repository. There is no lookup on this site and there will not be one.
Officials and candidates are treated differently, and that difference is deliberate: they sought public power, so their votes, filings and donors are the subject of the site. Private individuals are not named — see the naming rule.
05
If a page is about you
Being on this site is not something you opted into.
If you hold or sought office in Washington, pages here describe your public record, drawn from filings you or your campaign made with the state. We will not remove an accurate public record on request — that is the whole purpose of the site — but we will correct anything wrong, fast, and we would rather hear from you than not.
If you are not a candidate or an official and you have found yourself named here, that may itself be the error. Tell us at corrections@washingtonindependents.org and we will take it down while we check.
06
The launch notification list
The one place where we ask for anything.
The pre-launch page offers to email you once, when the site goes live. That address is used for that single message and nothing else — no newsletter, no sharing, no onward use.
The mailing-list provider is not named here yet. Handing an address to a third-party service is exactly the kind of thing this page exists to disclose, so the provider must be named before any address is collected. The sign-up form on the holding page is not currently wired to anything.

Changes to this page
Dated, and kept here rather than overwritten.
Corrected 21 October 2026. Earlier versions of this page said the site ran no analytics, no advertising and no third-party scripts. That was wrong: the site has run Google Site Kit, with Google Analytics, throughout, and has carried ads placed by Google AdSense. This page now says what runs and how to turn it off.
