Statewide ballot measures

  • Initiative 645 Repeals the tax on annual incomes over $1 million enacted by the legislature and prohibits the state and local governments from taxing individual income. On the ballot
  • Initiative to the Legislature 26-001 Rewrites the parental-rights law covering notification and access to records about children in public school. On the ballot
  • Initiative to the Legislature 26-638 Restricts participation in K-12 school athletics programs designated for girls to students identified female at birth. On the ballot

Initiatives certified to this ballot, from the Secretary of State’s filings. A measure the Legislature refers to voters directly, such as a constitutional amendment, is not in that record, so one on this ballot would be missing here.

How the count works, and what this page will not say

  1. 01 Washington votes by mail, and ballots postmarked on election day still count. Counties keep tallying for up to three weeks, so the first night’s numbers are routinely overturned.
  2. 02 No winners before certification. While counting, this page shows counts, the gap between candidates and the county’s own estimate of ballots left. It never says “leads,” “ahead,” or “projected,” and never reorders candidates by votes.
  3. 03 No bars or color on partial counts. A longer bar reads as a winner. Numbers are shown in the same ink for every candidate until the county certifies.
  4. 04 “Elected” appears only with a certification date and a link to the canvass. A multi-county district is elected when the last of its counties certifies, and a race inside the recount line waits for the recount.
  5. 05 Recounts are stated, not predicted. State law triggers a machine recount under a 0.5% and 2,000-vote gap; we say when a certified result falls inside that line, and nothing before.

Law Revised Code of Washington: RCW 29A.60.190 (postmarks and the county canvass), RCW 29A.60.250 (the Secretary of State’s certification), RCW 29A.64.021 (mandatory recounts)

Registering, your ballot, and where to return it

These come from your county elections office, not from us. VoteWA shows your registration, your ballot status and your nearest drop box. You can register in person through 8 p.m. on November 3, 2026.

Online and mail registrations must be received, not postmarked, by October 26, 2026. Ballots are mailed by October 16, 2026. How registration works in Washington.

What is already decided

221 contests have one name on the ballot. Each is decided before a vote is cast, and each is listed here rather than folded into a rate: a specific seat can be looked up, a rate cannot. Alphabetical by county, then contest.

The money

Money nobody in the race controls

Independent expenditures and electioneering communications — money spent about these candidates by committees that are barred by law from coordinating with them. Spending for a candidate is not money from the candidate, and spending for and against are two different facts. They are never added together here.

What this page will not compute

An election page is where a forecast is expected, which makes it the page where the temptation to compute one is real. Each of these would make the page more useful and less true.

No projection.
A primary share is a fact about August. Carrying it forward to November is a model, and the model’s error is nowhere in the record. We publish the certified result and stop.
No “competitive” label.
Calling a race close or safe is a prediction wearing an adjective. The primary margins are printed on every race page; the reader can apply their own word.
No per-candidate ranking.
On this page candidates are listed alphabetically by surname, the same way before and after the votes are counted; the county’s ballot order is not in our copy of the record. No score, no grade, no “frontrunner”.
No net money.
Spending for and spending against a candidate are two facts. Subtracting one from the other manufactures a third that nobody reported, and erases whichever side was smaller.
No location.
We do not detect where you are and never will. The legislative races are listed by district and every other contest by county, so a reader can find their own; the page does not do it for them.
No race calls.
After the election, counts appear here and on each race page as the counties release them, with the count’s own timestamp. The only “decided” state is the certifying authority’s.

Common questions

How many races are on Washington’s 2026 general election ballot?
473 candidate contests, counted from the certified August 4, 2026 primary: 10 federal, 122 legislature, 67 judicial, 274 county & local. Ballot measures are not counted here; they have their own pages.
How many 2026 races are already decided?
221 contests have one name on the general ballot. 47 of those held no primary at all: Washington skips the primary for a nonpartisan office with two or fewer candidates (RCW 29A.36.171). The other 174 sent a single name through the primary because nobody else filed.
Where do these results come from?
The Washington Secretary of State’s certified primary results, statewide and county files, certified August 21, 2026. We publish the certified canvass, not election-night returns.
When will November 3, 2026 general election results appear here?
From election night, this page shows each legislative race’s count and each race page carries returns as the counties release them, with the count’s own timestamp. We publish returns; we do not call races. The certified result replaces them when the counties certify.
Why does a candidate show no money?
Because no PDC report matched them on the key we join on (ballot name + office family + district number), or because the office reports elsewhere — federal candidates file with the Federal Election Commission, which this site does not hold. An unmatched candidate shows no figure rather than someone else’s.

Where this page comes from

Every figure above is read from a primary source and rebuilt on a schedule. Nothing here is modelled or inferred; where a source is silent the page says so rather than filling the gap.

Population
every candidate contest in the Secretary of State’s certified August 4, 2026 primary files, statewide and county, plus the judicial contests that held no primary, reconstructed from PDC candidate filings (nonpartisan office, two or fewer filers). Precinct committee officer contests are party elections and are excluded; ballot measures are on their own pages.
One contest, once
a contest in the statewide file is counted from that file alone. County files contribute only contests the statewide file lacks; a county’s copy of a multi-county contest is a partial count and is never merged into the totals.
Top two
the two candidates with the most certified primary votes advance, whatever their party preference. A contest with one named candidate is unopposed in the general. Write-in lines are not candidates.
Money
PDC C-3 contributions to candidate committees for this cycle, joined to a ballot name on ballot name + office family + district number. A name that matches two filers is refused and shows no figure. The unmatched count is printed above.
Outside money
PDC C-6 independent expenditures and electioneering communications naming a candidate, split by the stance the spender filed. For and against are never netted. A report with no stance is in neither figure.
Returns
on election night the race pages carry the counties’ released returns with the snapshot’s own timestamp. We publish returns; we do not call races. The certified canvass replaces them.
The phase
this page is “before” until election day, “counting” from then, and shows counts marked official only when every county’s latest count in the Secretary of State’s results feed carries the official flag. Nobody is marked elected without both a certification date and a link to the county canvass.
Ballot order
the order the county prints candidates is not in any source we hold. The legislative races list candidates alphabetically by surname, and the order never changes with the count.
Dates
filing week is set by RCW 29A.24.050; ballot mailing, registration and certification dates are the latest the law allows (RCW 29A.40.070, 29A.08.140, 29A.60.190, 29A.60.250), taken from the voter guide’s build where it covers this election.
